This is a wonderful piece of dome from the infamous American Dome Headed dinosaur Pachycephalosaurus from the equally infamous Hell Creek Formation in Powder River County, Montana, USA! These strange herbivores, nearly 15 feet long and one thousand pounds, roamed North America from 70 to 65 million years ago. They fed on soft leaves, seeds, and fruit, slicing them up with their (surprisingly) small leaf-shaped serrated teeth. Their most striking feature being the large dome on their skull, up to 9 inches thick! The exact purpose of this dome has been debated for decades. The most well know theory is that the animals used their domes in "headbutting contests" similar to modern bighorn sheep. The domes were smooth but still very ornate, being surrounded by boney knobs and spikes! The piece measures 2.229 inches (5.66 cm) long, 1.879 inches (4.77 cm) wide, and 1.546 inches (3.93 cm) thick! A fantastic piece from a bizarre, iconic, and surprisingly rare dinosaur worthy of any fossil collection!
