This is a HUGE Perisphinctes Ammonite from the Late Jurassic of Madagascar! Ammonites are cephalopods, like squid and octopi, except they had shells. Ammonites lived from 416 million years to 65 million years ago when they went extinct with the dinosaurs. Scientists have documented over 10,000 species of ammonite! Perisphinctes is a diverse genus of ammonites with dozens of species that lived all over the world during the late Jurassic. This piece is not only enormous by Perisphinctes standards (usually about 3 inches across) about 90% of the shell was wonderfully preserved! A rarity on Perisphinctes this large which are usually just internal molds. The piece is natural baring the opening to the living chamber has been polished for aesthetics. An absolutely stunning and massive fossil!
