This is a beautiful large fossil Phytosaur tooth from the Triassic Redonda Formation of Quay County, New Mexico! The tooth is in great condition with a terrific tip, a partial root, and no repair or restoration! While the tooth doesn't have any serrations, strangely it actually never did since while most Phytosaur teeth are serrated some, like this one, didn't have serrations. These non serrated teeth were most likely used for holding prey in place like the spokes of a fork while the serrated teeth were used to cut it up. It measures 1.18 inches (3.01 cm) and comes in a double sided clear display case for easy transport and display!
Phytosaurs are a group of prehistoric, mostly semi-aquatic reptiles that lived during the Triassic Period more than 200 million years ago. They were uncannily similar to crocodiles in appearance, size, and biology despite the two groups being less closely related than elephants and sloths! This phenomenon is called convergent evolution. Unlike crocodiles, Phytosaur’s nostrils were near their eyes, they had armor on their backs and bellies, and often serrated teeth. Like crocodiles, they would wait by the water’s edge to ambush prey which would have included some of the very first dinosaurs!
Makes a great gift for dinosaur, fossil, and science enthusiasts! This is a great opportunity to own a piece of a strange and very early prehistoric reptile at a price that won't break the bank!
