This is a beautiful skull fragment with a complete molar from a prehistoric Bear (Ursus Sp.) from the Pleistocene of Siberia! The piece is in fantastic condition and measures 3.22 inches (8.18 cm) with no repair or restoration!
While its known for its modern species, the brown bears, black bears, and polar bears, the genus Ursus has quite a history in the fossil record as well. Several extinct species coexisted with, and in some cases evolved into their modern counterparts throughout the Pliocene and Pleistocene all over the world! Some notable extinct species are the herbivorous Cave Bears and the Etruscan bear which is believed to be the ancestor of the Cave Bears as well as Brown and Polar Bears. This specimen from the Siberian permafrost could have come from an extant species of Brown Bear (both Eastern Siberian and Kamchatka Brown Bears have lived in that area for thousands of years) or a species of Cave Bear!
