Ammonites are cephalopods, like squid and octopi, except they had shells. Ammonites lived from 416 million years to 65 million years ago when they went extinct with the dinosaurs. Scientists have documented over 10,000 species of Ammonite! An Ammonite’s shell is made up of individual chambers separated by a thin wall. The patterns created by these walls, called sutures, were different between species! An Ammonite’s shell would grow with them and add more chambers. The actual animal lived in the large chamber at the opening of the shell. The other chambers would be filled with air or water to help the Ammonite swim, hunt, and escape from being hunted. Black Ammonites are super rare, making up only 1% of the Ammonites found in Madagascar! This piece was sliced down the middle and polished.
