This is a GORGEOUS, TOP QUALITY Plate of 18 Connected Fossil Scutes (Boney Armor) from a Glyptodont from the Pliocene to Pleistocene of Florida! The overall piece measures 8.14 x 7.44 x 1 Inches (20.68 x 18.89 x 2.54 cm)! The individual scutes show fantastic rosette patterns! One scute has a repaired break, but isn't restored. The other 17 scutes have no repair or restoration! The 18 scutes were found separately and then fit back together. These came from the same animal and were connected to each other in life! It comes with a plastic stand for a beautiful display!
Glyptodonts are large, extinct, herbivorous mammals that first appeared 38 million years ago and went extinct at the end of the Ice Age 12 thousand years ago. They had shells covering their body made of interlocking plates forming a strong armor much like their modern cousins, armadillos. Unlike armadillos, they could not roll into a ball. Glyptodonts were also MUCH larger. Some species grew to lengths of over 12 feet long, 6 feet tall, and over two and a half tons!
Connected Glyptodont scutes are one of the most sought after Ice Age fossils, but rarely exceed 5 or 6 scutes. A plate of 18 is extraordinarily rare! A great opportunity to own a Top Quality piece of an iconic Ice Age mammal!
