This is a HUGE Beautiful Fossil Megalodon Shark Tooth from offshore North Carolina U.S.! Megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon) was the largest known species of shark to have ever lived. It grew to over 60 feet (18 meters) in length and fed primarily on large marine mammals including whales, dolphins, seals, manatees, and even the occasional Mammoth out for a swim. A great addition to any fossil collection or gift for aspiring paleontologists, the tooth measures 5.09 inches (12.94 cm) along its longest edge and 4.11 inches (10.44 cm) wide with fantastic serrations and no repair, restoration, or alteration!
The tooth also has a pathology! A residual cusp is present! Megalodon's ancestors, such as Otodus obliquus and Carcharocles auriculatus, all had cusps on either side of their teeth. These cusps shrank over time as the tooth grew larger, culminating in Megalodon. In this particular tooth, something caused it to develop a cusp (or possibly cusps at one point) just like its ancestors! A unique and VERY rare feature on an already magnificent tooth!
A fantastic piece from one of the largest and most terrifying predators to ever live!
