This is a Beautiful partial tooth from Eremotherium, a Giant Ground Sloth from the Pleistocene of the Southeast U.S.! The tooth measures a whopping 3.15 inches (8 cm) with no repair or restoration! It comes in a double sided clear display case with a stand for easy transport and a beautiful display!
One of the most iconic Ice Age Mammals, Ground Sloths are several groups of large ground dwelling animals within the sloth family (suborder Folivora). They first appeared about 35 million years ago and spread out throughout South America, the Caribbean, and eventually North America about 2.7 million years ago. Unlike the notoriously slow tree sloths, ground sloths were huge active herbivores with some species reaching the size of modern elephants! Like modern tree sloths, ground sloths had long arms with huge claws. However, while their arboreal contemporaries used these traits to cling to trees, ground sloths used their clawed arms to pull down branches (if not entire trees) to snack on leaves, dig up roots, and deliver a fearsome blow to any predator that dared harass one!
While all ground sloths were large animals "Giant Ground Sloths" (Megatheriidae) took that size to a truly monstrous level. It included two genera, Megatherium and Eremotherium. Eremotherium was the larger of the two and by default the largest of all ground sloths growing to 20 feet in length, 13 feet tall when standing on its hindlegs, and weighing over 7 tons. This beast was one of the very few mammals to challenge the size supremacy of elephants! Eremotherium first appeared about 4.9 million years ago and went extinct at the end of the Ice Age 11 thousand years ago.
