This is a beautiful partial molar from Stegodon from the Pleistocene of Java, Indonesia! The pieces measures 2.82 Inches (7.16 cm) and weighs 5.55 ounces with no repair or restoration!

Stegodon is an extinct, close relative of elephants. It first appeared roughly 11 million years ago and lived throughout Asia and Africa before going extinct about 10 thousand years ago. There were numerous species of Stegodon. The largest of which could reach over 12 feet tall at its shoulder and weigh 14 tons! Meanwhile the smallest species, found on an island in Indonesia, reached less than 4 feet at the shoulder and weighed roughly 550 pounds! Overall, Stegodon would have looked very similar to a modern elephant with most differences being very subtle like the shape and structure of its teeth. The most striking difference was in their tusks, with Stegodon tusks being straight and extraordinarily long, sometimes as long as the animal itself! One particularly large tusk discovered in India measured nearly 13 feet! The species of Stegodon this piece came from was most likely a roughly medium sized species that stood about 9 feet at the shoulder and weighed about 5.5 tons.
